Welcome to the Museum
History buffs will find a wealth of information at the Middlesex County Museum. It opened in 1935, making it the first county museum of its kind in Virginia. An old country store and General "Chesty" Puller memorabilia are prominent features, and the gift shop includes books on local history written by local authors. With county records dating back to the 1600s, family histories can be traced back through several generations. The museum is located on General Puller Highway near the courthouse in the historic, rural county seat of Saluda. The neighboring annex building houses a new exhibit, The History of Education in Middlesex County , and the lovely and serene Puller Park is just across the street.

Historic Marker to be Placed in Honor of Irene Morgan
Eleven years before Rosa Parks, Irene Morgan was arrested in Virginia for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger. She was convicted on October 18, 1944 at the Middlesex County Circuit Court, but appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court where her conviction was upheld. With help from NAACP lawyers, including Thurgood Marshall, Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in March 1946. Though narrowly interpreted, the Court's decision struck down state laws requiring segregated seating for interstate bus travel.
