Soldiers at the Doorstep Civil War Lore by Larry S. Chowning
|
The Civil War era was a heartbreaking and emotional time for those
living in the South and in the North. The vignettes in this collection show not
only the fear, but also the courage, the defiance, and the ingenuity the
people at home showed under extremely difficult circumstances.
While these particular tales are southern, it is likely that the same sort of
narrative could have come from people in any state where soldiers roamed.
Some of the stories even involve northerners living in the South: for
example, Mrs. Kelly, the wife of a Union soldier, who convinced the
Yankees to give back her cow and some hens taken from her neighbors,
then shared the milk and eggs with those neighbors throughout the war.
The homespun quality of these accounts makes them uncommonly
affecting to the reader. It is history "as told to," an especially effective way
to learn about the challenges faced by earlier generations.
