A Patchwork Quilt is a first-hand account of life in rural King and Queen
County, Virginia, in the first decades of this century. Each of its twenty-two
chapters forms a square in the patchwork of the author’s experiences,
memories, descriptions, and activities.
Written from a personal perspective, it focuses on facts of farm life such as
the corn and wheat crops, occupations, housekeeping, making molasses,
cleaning the well, church services and schooling. It is indexed for easy
reference.
The author, Louise Eubank Gray, was born in King and Queen. She is a
graduate of the University of Richmond. She spent 39 years as a teacher in
the public schools of King and Queen and Middlesex Counties.
After retirement she pursued her life-time interest in local history to co-
author two books: Historic Buildings in Middlesex County, Virginia 1650-
1875 and History of Lower King and Queen Baptist Church, 1772-1980. She
has written numerous articles on historical subjects.
Mrs. Gray has one son and two grandsons. She makes her home in Saluda,
Virginia.
