Love Stories is the 10th book by Mary Wakefield Buxton.  A
collection of short stories about memorable persons and places in
Middlesex County, the book is perfectly titled.  It is based on Mary’
s 20 years of writing stories about her friends, neighbors and
acquaintances in her hometown newspaper, the Southside
Sentinel.
“I always fall in love with the people I write about,” Mary
confesses, which she readily admits may be a little bit strange.
Nonetheless, it is a very important part of the writing process for
her, and thus, the title of this book.
In Love Stories, Mary champions rural life, old fashioned
values, historic plantations, loving one’s neighbors, friends, small
towns, family ties, parades, preachers, church life, dogs, sailors,
soldiers, the corner drugstore, tugboats, the American flag, the
family doctor, and even a genuine Indian Chief.  The stories are
set on a beautiful peninsula of land tucked in amongst the
Rappahannock River, Chesapeake Bay, Piankatank River and
the Dragon Run, known as Middlesex County, Virginia.
